Massachusetts Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship is the process in which you perform electrical work under the direct supervision of a licensed electrician. This is also called “hands on” or “practical” experience. This process might also include some educational classroom courses. This depends on the state and/or the school, which provides the training.

Massachusetts Electrician License Renewal and Continuing Education

After you receive your license, you will be subject to Continuing Education and periodic renewals.

The renewal fees are as follows for each license:

  • Master Electrician $117, triennial (every three years), with due date 31 of July. The renewal fees start from July of 2009. This means that you will have to renew your license at July 2012, July 2015 and so forth.
  • Journeyman Electrician $78, triennial (every three years), with due date 31 of July. The renewal fees start from July of 2009. This means that you will have to renew your license at July 2012, July 2015 and so forth.
  • Systems Contractor $117, triennial (every three years), with due date 31 of July. The renewal fees start from July of 2009. This means that you will have to renew your license at July 2012, July 2015 and so forth.
  • Systems Technician $78, triennial (every three years), with due date 31 of July. The renewal fees start from July of 2009. This means that you will have to renew your license at July 2012, July 2015 and so forth.

If you fail to renew your license by the designated date, you will have to pay an extra fee of $57 for the renewal. There are also other fees for name change and other stuff, that can be found in the chart.

All licensees are subject to Continuing Education. During the course of 3 years prior to renewal they will have to go under 21 or 15 hours (depending on their license and residence) of continuing education.

Massachusetts Electrician Licensure Examinations

After you apply and you are approved to participate in the exams, you will have to prepare for them.

Candidate Information Bulletin can come pretty handy.

There are 2 parts of the examination for each license. You can sit for both of them in the same day or schedule them with some time apart from each other.

After you are approved to participate in the exams, you will have 12 months to pass them. If you don’t you will have to reapply from the start, with the same fees applicable.

For people with disabilities, you can arrange special accommodations. You will have to fill the application found at the end of Candidate Information Bulletin and FAX it to PSI (702) 932- 2666.

The exams are open-book and you will need a score of 70% or higher in order to pass. Note that some of the references are allowed in the test center, but some others (from which some questions might be derived) are not.

Master Electrician:

Part 1 – There are 80 questions and the maximum time allowed is 240 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at pages 6-7.

Part 2 – Business and Law exams. The number of questions is 50 and the maximum time allowed is 120 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at page 7.

Journeyman:

Part 1 – There are 70 questions and the maximum time allowed is 180 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at pages 7-8.

Part 2 – There are 30 questions and the maximum time allowed is 60 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at page 8.

Systems Contractor:

Part 1 – There are 70 questions and the maximum time allowed is 180 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at pages 8-9.

Part 2 – Business and Law exams. The number of questions is 50 and the maximum time allowed is 120 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at page 7.

Systems Technician:

Part 1 – There are 50 questions and the maximum time allowed is 120 minutes. The references and the field of questions can be found at page 9.

Massachusetts Electrician License Reciprocity and Licensure without Examinations

Licensing without examination might be available for states with which Massachusetts has reciprocity, or by providing satisfactory documents of previous experience under another state’s license.

Massachusetts has currently reciprocity with New Hampshire for both Journeyman and Master electrician licenses.

You will have to fill and submit the application for Master Electrician by Reciprocity, or the application for Journeyman Electrician by Reciprocity.
